i'm looking for a new cpu and i am torn between the two. i know that the i5 has turbo boost and is a quad core but the i3 has the freaky fast sandy bridge core, and that the i5 is able to be overclocked while the i3 is not, but the i3 has HT. both processors are pretty cheap at the moment, with a used i5 being $125 and a used i3 being $99. which should i go with?

I'd prefer the quad core, less load on each core being shared between 4 cores and not 2, and it has a turbo boost so more GHz, and if your cooling is good enough then go for overclocking, just don't over do it, or make sure it isn't going to be bottle necked, cause of your ram and gpu it might, so cause of the bottle neck, i reckon the i3.
When drag racing there is no replacement for displacement.

They have different sockets. And if you don't have the right socket on your motherboard you'll have to buy a new one, and that's where the problems really start.

The i5-750 is somewhat good, but it's from the first generation of the "i" products from intel and uses the outdated 1156, so if you'll want to later change the processor, without changing the motherboard, you'll just end up buyign another outdated processor.

The i3 however, uses the 1155 socket. You probably won't have to buy a new motherboard after that, if you plan on upgrading to a newer Intel proc, because Intel will likely stick to this architecture for a while now. The problem is that's it's just a dual-core, not a quad.

Boost is a fairly bad idea. It basically overclocks all cores, leading to a massive spike in temperature.

Buying second hand is not a good idea. Especially if the person you're buying it from is someone like me, who overclocks and does all sorts of fiendish things to it.

So save up and buy an Intel i5 2500k, replace everything in your PC, and you'll have the best bang-for-buck PC money can buy.

Also, the latest PC build guide from /g/ I could find, so give it a good read and learn.

yes, i am aware of the different sockets, but i haven't ordered a new motherboard yet and i won't until i am sure of what processor i will get. and if i can get an ivy bridge i5 for only $150 at microcenter, i will definitely go with the 1155 socket. lucky for me, there is a microcenter about 45 minutes from where i live :D

Intel Core i3-2100 advantages

Intel Core i3-2100
Single-threaded performance of the processor is better.
The Core i3-2100 has AVX instructions enabled. Although these extensions are not widely used in programs yet, this should improve in future apps.
The Intel i3-2100 comes with integrated HD 2000 GPU. While this Graphics Processing Unit is not fast enough to play latest games at full resolution, it can be used for casual gaming and 3D applications.
The microprocessor is 32% more energy efficient.

Intel Core i5-750 advantages

The Core i5-750 is 29% faster in multi-threaded programs.
